This is a zwave card for a lynx touch 5100 alarm system It allows the lynx alarm to control zwave devices, lights, locks, thermostats. It is not meant for anything other than the lynx touch alarm panel and won't work in anything else. Hope this helps
Does this board 'snap' into the 5100L? I'm under monitoring service. Can I piggyback with this module for home automation?
It should plug in to designed slot, mine snapped in, no issues. Monitoring service should be separate.
Do you need this for the Lynx to send alerts to cell phones / land lines, or does the Lynx do that out of the box?
Yes the lynx can do that out the box the Zwave module is for automation for controlling zwave lights thermostat or zwave locks

This review is for the Honeywell L5100-ZWAVE – Z-Wave Control Communication Module.
This module is required in order to integrate Z-Wave devices into the Honeywell Lynx alarm panels such as the Honeywell 5877 Garage Door Relay or Honeywell internet programmable thermostats. Currently, I’m only using it for my garage door and it works perfectly, I’ve had no issues with communication or reception even though the garage is 300 feet or so away from my panel in a separate building. Easy to install - youtube it.
This is as described and very easy to install. Be sure to disconnect the power and battery before installing – I was told wall power first and then battery – or it can surge and fry the zwave board. Be aware you have to pay for zwave service through Honeywell and you only really need this if you have zwave devices that you cannot control through a home automation controller like Vera etc.

Very easy installation, great way to expand the usefulness of your system
Installed in a Honeywell L5100 panel. The chip simply slides on to the existing port. Had it installed in a few seconds. Word of warning: be sure to check with your alarm company (if your system was installed by a company) to ensure you do not void the warranty simply by installing the chip–some companies can be fickle about any minor changes, even though it improved the system and did not damage of the hardware to install this chip. With the chip, I am able to control two thermostats, lights, and any other Z Wave compatible accessory.

Great functionality, documentation doesn't call out some of the gotchas
Man, there are some hoops to jump through to get my Kwikset Smartlock paired and working with this thing, but now that everything is setup and working — the documentation is NOT helpful — it’s awesome to just unlock my door and have the system get disarmed.
