Frequently asked question

Can this be installed in a 4-way configuration (a dimmer with two remotes)?

Yes

how far can i be away from the switch to be still using the app?

It's a Bluetooth-enabled switch, so I'd say about 30 ft.

Can I program it to go on 1 hour before sunset?

Yes, this product can be programmed to turn on or off at a predetermined time before or after sunset through the Decora Digital Dimmer & Timer App. David Keller … see more Yes, this product can be programmed to turn on or off at a predetermined time before or after sunset through the Decora Digital Dimmer & Timer App. David Keller Leviton Vice President, e-Business

Is the remote required for the other switch (2-way setup)?

Yes, absolutely. Though it looks like a regular switch it does not function as an actual switch, it is more of a low speed data connection. When you push the remote, or companion switch it sends a signal to the main switch essentially telling the main switch to change states (from On to Off or vice versa.) The actual turning on and off of the connected light or other device is always done by the main unit. Hopefully this helps. It will become much clearer when you look at the wiring diagram which shows that you do not wire these like you do a regular 3 way switch, it is totally different and actually uses less wires.

Trouble programming and Bluetooth is of no value

I had no trouble installing the switch or getting it to work manually – the issues I had were with programming. There are lots of instructions and pictorials on how to assemble and install, but, for some reason, there are no instructions on how to program the timer. I could not find anything posted by anyone after an online search. Although it may appear obvious, I had trouble understanding how to program it to turn ON or OFF at the desired times or at sunrise or sunset. Also, using Bluetooth to operate the switch is of LITTLE value – we need to operate it remotely. The most telling signs also comes when you download the Leviton app into your phone – users hate the interface. Yesterday, after trial and errors, I was able to figure out how to program the switch and the switch operates as I had expected. However, having read complaints from other users who have had this switch for a while, it is too early to tell if this switch will keep time. I have changed my rating from One Star to Two.

Will not switch off, but otherwise great!

Wish this was a 5-star product as I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Bluetooth option. There are so few home automation products on the market which don’t force you to send commands through their cloud servers, AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM! Thank you Leviton for offering Bluetooth connectivity in a switch product and not making me create an account to use it!
    With that said,
    The GOOD:
    1) Bluetooth worked flawlessly for me. BT is purposely designed to be short-range, so stop complaining that you can’t connect at 80 feet.
    2) The switch is very attractive and well built. The status and dim position LEDs can be turned off.
    3) I think the app is well designed. Well, the location configuration could use a little work.
    4) The dimmer function has a good number of levels.
    5) Installation is no more difficult than a standard switch. Yes, please hire an electrician if you’re not sure about the differences between HOT and NEUTRAL.
    The BAD:
    1) They just had to emboss their name on the bottom. I paid a lot of money for this switch, and don’t really want to advertise your brand in my living room. Really Leviton, why?
    2) The scheduling is pretty simplistic. An example of something it cannot do is turn on 30 minutes before sunrise. You are limited to On/Off at sunset, sunrise, or a particular time.
    The UGLY:
    1) The switch does not really ever switch OFF. It claims to be off, but it still leaks a little current. If you use one of the bulbs on the approved list, you may not notice, but some LED lights will glow faintly even when switched ‘OFF’. I did easily reach Leviton technical support (thank you), but they could not help with this problem. The stand by their switch working with bulbs on the approved list, but admit that some current does flow even when off.
Note that my review is for the DDL06-BLZ model 600W Dimmer Switch.

Great idea, poor documentation for app, terrible AM radio interference.

Well, it finally worked. I was looking for a combination dimmer timer. It does that and has the ability to turn on a dusk and off at dawn depending one your location. Just what I was looking for. It has a lot more features that I didn’t test, and that other reviewers commented on. Setup is via smartphone / bluetooth. I used an iPhone. An app is used with Bluetooth interface. They say to follow the instructions in the app. That is pretty much the extent of Leviton’s documentation for the app. So I did that. After the pairing procedure, I selected the on at dusk feature. It did that, but never turned off. So I thought maybe the On/Off slider needed to be off. I tried that and it did not turn on. Time to call customer service.
Customer service told me that I needed to set up two events, one to turn it on, and one to turn it off. Should that be obvious? Nothing in the app that was supposed to have directions said that. Customer Service said that is a common question he gets. Come on Leviton, don’t you test your documentation with users that are going in cold?
Once you understand the Bluetooth interface, setup is very simple. Compare that with the Intermatic ST01 which also has an astronomic capability (no dimming capability though). Setup for that consists of the usual lengthy physical button steps. So Leviton has a good product here I think. Two stars off for lazy documentation. Should have one more off for sloppy AM noise suppression. My old dimmer was so much better.
    Update – Nov 30, 2017.
Yesterday I changed the brightness (with the app) of my outdoor light from 45% to 50%. This morning the light did not turn off. ?????
It turned out that the off schedule was gone. What’s going on? Since this thing needs two schedules to turn on and turn off, how does changing the on schedule (where dimming is specified) delete the off schedule?
This thing is so frustrating! I find when you figure out how to make it work, leave it alone. I had to reset it a few months ago when my 8 year old grandson was here. I don’t know what he did (can you cause this to stop working without access to the app?), but he managed to stop the automatic on at dusk, off at dawn operation.
Changing 3 stars to 2. This device is so finicky that it is sometimes not worth the trouble. You would think that management would do a better job of making a good idea more user friendly. When you take the time to drive in a nail, fill the hole.
By the way, I discovered the light was on due to the static if creates in my radio. It is usually off by the time I turn the radio on, and this poorly designed dimmer interferes with radio reception at 30 feet away! I would look for something better if you are an AM radio user.
    Update Dec 1, 2017
Well, connecting with the app apparently changed the clock in the DDL06-BLZ, but not Standard Time/Daylight Savings Time. I had set up the device in June, and it worked (when I finally got it working) until I just changed the dim setting. So even though the transition to Standard Time occurred, the device kept working correctly until I connected. I think what happened is the device did not change the clock to Standard Time, so the one hour late on/off was compensated by the late clock setting. As soon as I connected with the iPhone, it updated the device clock, but left Time On, Time Off at Daylight Savings Time, causing the mysterious late operation. Yet it apparently detected it was Daylight Savings Time when I initiated usage in the summer.
What a waste of my time this thing is. Poorly documented, and poorly tested.
Update 9/25/2018: What a piece of junk! I use this to turn an outdoor light on at dusk and off at dawn. That is what it is designed to do, so why do I find it failing after a period of time. It consistently fails over time, and I have to sign on with my iPhone to reset it. I have read other reviews that report the same problem. Changing to one star.
