Frequently asked question

what is the max ambient temperature rating?

Maximum temperature of the GE 14284 is 104° F

Is this IP44 rated for water intrusion?

Sort of. For the price, as a DIY part, this is the best z-wave outdoor switch I found. For the price, as a DIY part, this is the best z-wave outdoor switch I found. If you plug this switch into an 'in-service' outdoor receptacle, and you fully close that receptacle cover over the switch cable, and the GE z-wave switch receptacle is facing downward, and the location is away from water spray, as from a lawn sprinkler, then the conditions are safely within the IP rating of the GE switch. IP 44 is suitable for an occasional splash of water. IP 65 is ok for a spray or jet of water.

Would this work as an outdoor z wave repeater to connect a ring security system in my house to a ring motion sensor in my outdoor shed?

All Z-Wave 'Always-Powered' devices will work as a Z-Wave repeater.

Does this device have a built-in fuse? I would like to use the outdoor z-wave appliance module to power a pipe heating cable.

The GE 14284 Outdoor Smart Switch does have an internal fuse, however it is not user-serviceable. Should the unit be used with a product outside of its specification or ratings and the fuse blows, then the unit will not longer operate and would need to be completely replaced.

Z wave outdoor outlet - you should know what this means if you are looking here

1 major dislike. The plug is NOT an angled plug, it is straight and that is just poor design. This means that if you are using the correct, code compliant outdoor in use cover, the cable has to bend sharply as it comes out of the plug to go out the bottom of the cover and this is not necessary strain to put om the cable and the cable relief grommet. This is just bad design and sloppy work by GE / Jasco. Interestingly the Jasco branded version of this plug does have the angled plug, but it is Z wave not Z wave + and that is old technology.
Some have complained about the button being hard to press – nope.
Some complained about hard to add to the hub (smartthings) – nope
Minor dislike, the button is not illuminated so you have a visual poke yoke to see that the plug is on or off. Other manufacturers do have this & it is a very nice thing to have so you don’t have to guess or pull up your controlling app to verify the status (assuming it is not powering lights or a fountain etc.)
    Otherwise, so far so good.

    Works great for Christmas lights

I got this to integrate my outdoor Christmas lights with my Smartthings hub so I could control them without using traditional timers.
Setup was pretty easy. I plugged it into a wall outlet near my hub so it would have an easier time of find the hub. The biggest issue with setup that made me actually think I got a dud is the power button was nearly impossible to press. I finally figured it out after several tries. This is why I am knocking off one star. The power button should have been better designed.
Over the Christmas season though, once setup, it’s never had a hiccup, never shown as disconnected or missing and has never failed to turn things on and off as scheduled.

    Works really great

I do recommend this plug. I have installed it on a backyard tree. It’s been there for 2 years now, and didn’t have any problems.
The alexa integration and response is really quick. I use smartthings and the hub is far from the plug, and the signal is just fine.

Tip for Pairing - Must be Close

It is my understanding that during the pairing process only, the devices need to be very close to each other. Once they’re paired you’ll get the full range plus mesh networking functionality. I was told this had to do with pairing security as the devices are performing their handshake under low power/range. This was also the case with this device. Once I hooked it to an extension cord and brought it near my controller it paired instantly. I previously tried at the closest outlet and it didn’t work. After pairing it has considerable range and works perfectly. I just wanted to mention this for those who are having trouble pairing. Note this is easier to perform with this device than with a switch or outlet because it can be plugged directly into extension cord.
For switches and outlets I made an extension cord with exposed conductors to bring the devices close and have had good success pairing every device. Just be sure to wire the extension cord adapter thru a nonmetallic jbox prior to plugging in so you’re not exposed to the current on the side terminals of switch/outlet.

GE makes a great product, I tried others and they just led to disapointment

    Personal Experience:
This spring I set up some patio string lights so my family wouldn’t have to use our flood lights at night. After getting the lights set up I wanted to add them to a smart switch so I could use Alexa to turn the lights on and off. Originally I purchased the iHome iSP100 Wifi Outdoor Smart Plug and was disappointed beyond belief. I have a full review of the iHome product but long story short is that I gave it a 2 star review rather than 1 star because the iHome stilled turned on my lights when I pushed the manual button. After I removed the iHome I went to find a GE smart switch because I already had 5 in my house and I was pleased with their performance. When I received the GE Enbrighten Z-Wave Plus Outdoor Smart Plug Switch it honestly took me more time to unpack the product than it did connecting to my SmartThings Hub. The setup was so simple, plug into wall, have the SmartThings Hub search for a new product, Name new product, Done! I honestly cannot state how easy the GE switch and SmartThings hub were to pair. I have learned my lesson and will not buy poor quality ‘Smart Products’ like the iHome products. GE switches have been 100% reliable when connected to my SmartThings hub.
Yes, if you value your time don’t buy other crap just to come back to this like I did.
    Easy setup
    Worked the first time
    Good build quality
    Designed for outdoors
Connected to Alex in less than 5 minutes from when I took it out of the box (honestly)
Cost $5 more than iHome (but I wasted more than $5 of my time trying to get the iHome to work)

Works perfectly with SmartThings. Good for damp locations but not meant to be rained or snowed on.

Previously, I was using an Aeotec switch not made for outdoors to control things like my Christmas lights. I loosely wrapped it in plastic wrap to protect it from the elements, and haven’t had any issues yet. When the price dropped on this product, I decided to pick one up since this one was made to be outside. The instructions say it is okay for damp locations, but not where it will be exposed to water or snow directly. Well, I guess I will still be wrapping it in plastic to be safe.
The outlet has a nice, thick rubber seal on it to protect the outlet when not in use. It also has a mounting hole and comes with a wall anchor and screw, for mounting it to a wall and keeping it in place.
This paired perfectly in SmartThings, and can now be controlled like I had my other Christmas Lights outlet. I usually have my lights turn on at sunset, off at midnight, back on at 5am, and off again at sunrise. Although I am not using this full-time yet, I tested it in my outdoor GFI outlet to make sure the hub can communicate with it at a relatively long distance and the hub had no problem communicating with it.
This product is a must have for anyone who wants to safely control outdoor lights, fountains, etc. via their Z-wave hub.
