Expensive but worth it... at least for me.

Work extremely well and as advertised (have had to use the when I burned popcorn). Love the clear warning before the alarm sounds. Nightlight feature is an added plus. Set to 4 stars as it would be really nice to convert battery powered into the wired version.
We are living in and renovating a large victorian house that didn’t have any smoke detectors. I wanted something battery powered and connected to each other. I also wanted something I could turn off with my phone as the ceilings are very high. Also having had connected smoke alarms in another house I wanted something that would identify where the smoke was.
We got to test it the other night when I accidentally burned the popcorn. The smoke alarms on all floors of the house loudly and clearly said ‘heads up, there is smoke in the dining room, The alarm will sound and it will be loud’ I was able to shut it off easily from my phone before the ear splitting alarm went off. Had the phone not worked the button on the smoke detector is large and easily pushed with a broom handle.
The night light feature was a surprising plus. It can be turned on and off per smoke alarm so if you have one in your room it won’t turn on as you roll around it bed. We have it on for the ones in the hallway and make a great night light when the kids getup to go to the bathroom. It’s on just enough to illuminate your path but not too bright to take away your night vision or wake you up too much. It also is not enough to disturb people in other rooms.
Overall I’m really happy with them but when you need 10 of them in your house it starts to get extremely pricey. I really hope the batteries hold out as long as they state and that replacements are not too expensive. For those interested the batteries are AA sized lithium batteries. Since we are renovating the house room by room over several years I would really like to be able to convert the battery powered units into wired units as we add wiring when we renovate a room. That is the only reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars.

    Easy to install...

Unpack, download the app. use the app and install. This is my second set of the Nest smoke detectors. I bought the first generation in 2013. They have now expired. Nest says these expire every 7 years. I guess that’s because of the sensors in them. If they don’t work, they are worthless. So I bought this gen 2 model and had them up and running (installed) in about 15 mins. I then launched the app and deactivated the old ones I had. The only thing I wish for is an easy way to recycle the old ones. A recycle program from Nest would make a lot of sense. I would buy them again.

This devise does not work on 5G, but otherwise fine

I’m using 5G wifi network and these alarms will NOT connect to 5G. I have two Google thermostats and two google security cameras that work on 5G. You’d think all Google products would be up-to-date, but not this one!
UPDATE: The Nest app collects information across devises connected to different frequencies, so you can use this alarm on 2.4G even though your other devises are on 5G. Odd that a Google product is not compatible with 5G, but I have no other issues with the alarm so I raised my rating from 1 to 4 stars.

Great product, but it forces you to replace when expired (about 10 years)

I purchased the original version of this detector about ten years ago. I have four of them in my house. Those detectors reached their expiration. These detectors have an expiration date, usually about 10 years, and they do force you to replace them when they expire. Some may find this to be a good thing, while others do not.
I like that there are voice commands before the loud sound. The voice easily catches your attention and lets you know where the concern is located.
The worst thing about this product is the price. There are less expensive options that perform the same function of detection. I buy these because I like how they look and how they integrate with my other Nest products.

Nest comes through after a rough start.

Update: (2.6.2020) We’ll at first I was unhappy with this product from Nest. I have both cameras indoor and outdoor and thermostat. All of these work flawless. So as you might think that this Protect System would be the same. I returned the first set and gave Nest another shot. This set worked! Finally! Here is some much needed advice I offer to others who might have the same issues as I did. You might try and look anywhere online at Nest Help and Product Troubleshooting. First thing is. Make sure all three detectors are all together during setup!! This is very important!!! Do not install them until you complete the setup and test after setup! While setting up the second and third detectors, the primary, (1rst) should be glowing blue! This means it is detecting the others! Make sure your primary Detector is closest to your router, (It will help if you have a newer router that can support multiple smart devices. Mine will support 30+) It has been over a week now and only one went offline but I performed a weekly test, as suggested by Nest, and all was ‘OK’! I hope this helps others with setup issues and constant Offline issues as I did. It is easy to blame the manufacturer for issues when indeed it’s always something that is easily missed at the user’s end.

Convenient in ways I didn't even know I needed!

Love these. We have three dogs that freak out at any random noise, and I have a husband that likes to cook and doesn’t pay attention to the smell of burning. I also habitually forget to replace batteries on smoke detectors at the time change like you’re supposed to. These units warn you before actually going off, with a pleasant vocal message that smoke appears to be building, giving you time to silence the alarm before it goes off and makes the dogs crazy, while simultaneously telling your husband to deal with his burning food. They also have a motion sensor when you walk into the room in the dark, they will light a dim light for you (the lighting brightness is adjustable). I get a status report from them monthly, and although they perform a test monthly, it’s just a quick series of beeps, and although it wakes the dogs up, it’s not enough to start a full-scale panic. If they were ever to go off when we weren’t home, we’d get an alert on our phones that there was a problem, and could make sure it was addressed. Would totally buy again, even though they’re an arm and a leg.
