  • YOUR LOCK ON THE OUTSIDE, A SMART LOCK ON THE INSIDE: August smart locks replace the thumbturn on the inside of your door, making your regular deadbolt smarter, more secure and way more convenient. Keep the outside of your door the same, and your keys just in case (but you won’t need them).
  • GET IN AND OUT WITH THE AUGUST APP: No pockets? No problem. Lock and unlock your door with the August app on your phone or Apple Watch, and leave your house keys behind.
  • AUTO-LOCKS AND UNLOCKS: Auto-Unlocks as you get home for totally hands-free unlocking — great for when your arms are carrying kids or groceries. With Auto-Lock and DoorSense, your home automatically secures once your door is closed, or after a set amount of time (optional feature).
  • EASY TO INSTALL ON ANY DOOR: Even if you’re not so handy, installation only takes about 10 minutes. August locks fit perfectly on most single cylinder deadbolts.
  • RENTER-FRIENDLY: Renting your place? Home improvement isn’t just for homeowners. Modernize your apartment’s lock and then take it with you when you move — the old deadbolt thumbturn can be easily reinstalled.

Frequently asked question

What is the difference between this and august smart lock pro?

Aside from the way it looks, from my research the only difference is that the Smart Lock Pro has Apple Home support and this one doesn't. I don't use any apple products so I chose this model. It's been working great for me so far.

Is there a way to unlock if my phone battery is flat or I forgot my phone?

The easiest answer is to unlock it with the key you are using right now. If there is still battery, other options are the smartphone app, key code (with optional keypad). With wifi, Siri and Alexa, assuming the August Connect is also equipped.

    Not what was expected.

I have both the 3rd Gen Pro, Smart Lock and 1 bridge. I bought the smart lock and bridge back in November so I’ve had it set up and for a little over a month. I’m also working with a Samsung Galaxy S9 which has notoriously terrible Bluetooth connectivity.
So here are some thoughts on these locks.
    1. Buy the bridge. relying on Bluetooth alone will lead to you being locked out of your house. It’s hard to say if it’s the phone or the lock, but sitting here right now about 10 feet from my front door, I keep losing my connection to the lock. I also have to restart my phone to re-establish the connection to the lock that is not paired with the bridge. I find this more than just a little ridiculous. The lock that is paired with the bridge doesn’t lose it’s connection and thankfully, that’s the door I use most often. So if you want to make sure you have a continuous connection to your lock, even when in your house and standing next to your door, you have to have the bridge.
The Smart Lock – This feels like a legit dead bolt lock. It’s easy to install and the set up was easy. I have no issues with the lock itself. Although I have had to re-calibrate the lock twice after just 1 month.
The Smart Lock Pro – Feels a little cheap. For $200 it should feel solid when turning the cylinder to lock and unlock. However, it feels loose. I thought I might have just gotten one that wasn’t put together correctly but found that the demo models in store felt the same way. This is the one that’s not paired with the bridge and as such, it’s more of a dumb lock than a smart lock. Sadly, you can only pair one lock per bridge, so i’m having to purchase another bridge in order to hopefully get this thing to work as it’s supposed to.
The App – The app is pretty straight forward. It’s easy to share access to the locks with other people. Hopefully their Bluetooth works better than mine. The auto-lock function works well because it’s just a timer. The auto-unlock function is garbage. I would say that it only works about 10% of the time. So before you buy these locks, imagine that you’re coming home with arms full of groceries or a kid who really has to use the bathroom and your expecting the lock to recognize that a) you’re within 200 feet of the door b) the door needs to be unlocked. You reach for the handle to find that neither of these things are true and you now have to fumble with your phone, open the app or fumble with your keys to manually unlock the door. Meanwhile you’re dropping the eggs on the ground or the kid just went to the bathroom in his pants. Thanks August. So this aspect of the app needs a lot of attention. A 10% success rate is terrible. It also does not recognize that I have left the 200 foot perimeter. So at the moment, the auto lock / unlock feature is useless. The paired lock also works pretty well with Alexa.
I will be keeping the locks installed in hopes that the performance improves, especially after adding the second bridge. I wouldn’t buy these locks with high expectations of making your home any smarter or making sure that you get quick and easy access to you home in order to avoid accidents. After 1 month of ownership, I’d just say ‘buyer beware’.

    Adding to the family

Adding a third lock to my August Smartlock family. The original one purchased in 2016 is performing as well as the day it was installed, which I was able to do myself and I’m not at all mechanical.
I got the first one so I could give codes rather than keys, to my Airbnb guests and it really simplified not having to return keys or guests getting locked out of the house.
You cannot tell from the outside that there’s a Smartlock operating the door. It takes 4AA batteries and the batteries last a long time. I highly recommend this lock.

Pretty good and worth it but not perfect

Installation went well. Both my wife and I use our phones. Very convenient and works most of the time. Probably every 2 weeks there’ll be a time when it doesn’t open and you have to dig around and find the app on your phone to unlock. But when it works, it’s awesome.
We like to set it to auto lock. Interestingly, my wife’s phone is newer than mine and hers unlocks from the sidewalk in front of the house. Mine waits until I actually step onto the porch (which I much prefer).
Occasionally, when we are blocks from our house, we’ll both get alerts that it failed to open our locks. This is very strange as we would expect that even if it picked up the WiFi signal, based on location, it would know not to try to unlock. So, seems the software/hardware integration is still not perfect on the phone.
We both have android phones. Mine is around 4 years old, hers is 2 years.
We don’t need the WiFi integration on the lock. We felt that having bluetooth only would be more secure — less hack-able. Honestly, don’t know why we’d want that. Feature set without WiFi is good (except the spurious and slightly discomforting unlock attempts)

I have several of these on different properties

goes on very well you need to do some adjustment to make sure it closes properly without any obstruction, the bridge works very well and almost all cases depending on your internet service provider it seems to be pretty reliable and keeps communication with the lock, I am using this on a VRBO Airbnb property and it’s nice to provide the renter with their own code and to give them access at check-in and remove access after check out highly recommended

    Works well. Improved over time.

Installation was fairly easy, but depending on your door, may need to tweak a bit. App Setup can be a little glitchy, so be patient and try different things. E.g., reset bridge first, start all over, etc. In the end, worked. App is very good. When I first bought it a couple of years ago, the wifi connectivity was not totally consistent, but is now very good, without having done any improvements to home network. Maybe due to bridge/lock firmware or app updates by the vendor? On occasion, the event history will get things out of order. E.g., shows door locked before closed when events are done one right after the other. Overall, very satisfied with purchase. As modern locks now have integrated wifi (vs. separate bridge), I would likely, today, not buy a lock that requires a separate bridge.
