Frequently asked question

This looks like a pretty sketchy way to control an appliance or device, splicing into the power cord? Is this UL approved?

Not UL, CE or FCC approved. Don't splice this in to an appliance cord, splice it in to a short extension cord.

After the initial configuration, is it possible to control these without internet access (namely, from a closed office wlan with no internet gateway)?

As they come from the factory, there is no way to control them without internet access. In particular all control goes through a computer in another country. If you are into computers and programming, these devices are very popular with hobbyists since they can be reprogrammed to be controlled entirely within a local WiFi network. Do an internet search for 'sonoff tasmota' and read about how to reprogram them for local control.

    I love these sonoff devices

I have a ton of these. Mainly because I like the idea that I can flash my own firmware (Tasmota) and not have to use cloud services. The design is not the greatest as screws strip really easy and there is no 3rd leg for ground. I usually modify them manually. I also made my own 3d case for them as well. The board alone is worth the money.

    Excellent wifi switch

This wi-fi switch can be installed in anything under 10 amps which has a neutral and hot wire. I strongly suggest installing it in an extension cord rated at least 10 amps or more and then plugging it into whatever you want to switch so you can move it easily between switchable items.
Contrary to the other questions and answers the button on the front is not just a programming button it also manually controls the device as an on-off switch once it is programmed (so I suggest installing it near the ‘socket’ end of the extension cord for easier reach of the switch.

Kind of tough to connect some of them to WI-FI, but support was very good.

I installed 10 of these in fluorescent light fixtures which I had converted to LED tubes. That was the easy part. The switches are very light weight and delicate when it comes to wiring and mounting so don’t go crazy tight with the screws for the wiring or the wiring clamps etc. Then again they are only rated at 10 amps so don’t try to run major appliances with them. Connecting with the eWekink App was a challenge. Quick pairing mode did not work at all right out of the box for any of the 12 switches. I had to use Compatible mode for all 12 and some took a few attempts before connecting successfully. I followed the onscreen instructions for flashing lights as described while pairing. One huge pain is the fact that ‘ if I have to reset the switch to reconnect to WI-FI, I have to disassemble the light fixture to get at the Sonoff WIFI switch button. Other WI-FI switches are easily reset by simply switching power on and off in a pattern to get them back in pairing mode. The only way to reset or re-pair these switches to the network is by pushing and holding the button directly on the switch. Not convenient at all when installed inside the light fixture. The switches performed well up until the 1st power outage. Once power was restored the switches all reconnected to the network in a matter of a minute or so. Great, but now there was a problem. 2 of the switches would turn off after a few minutes. I tried to reset the switches with no luck. I then contacted to seller for support. I was sent replacement switches a few days later and all is well and working again. Thank You for your support! Amazon’s A to Z Guarantee is what keeps me coming back for more!

Great inexpensive WiFi controllable switch if you don't mind doing a little electrical work

I bought these switches to help automate our living room lighting, specifically for a number of plug-in lamps. In order to install these, you need to cut the cord and expose the ends of the wires. You also need to determine which of the lines is hot and which is neutral. Since most plugs are ‘keyed,’ with the larger prong being neutral, you can do this relatively easily. (I still used a meter to double-check.)
The wire connectors are very secure and a clamp on each side provides strain relief so they wont pull out.
These switches have a manual button on them so you can turn the device on or off manually as well as WiFi-controlled.
The Sonoff brand uses the Ewe-Link app to pair with and control the switches. I’m also using an integration to control them in Home Assistant. The pairing is easy and the app (and Home Assistant) work very well with them. The switches also have an LED that lights blue when the switch has power and red when it’s on.
There are two caveats: First, the switches make an audible ‘click’ when switching on or off. (It’s the relay. There’s nothing you can do about it.) Second, if the power goes out, the switches start back up in the ‘on’ mode. So, if your lose power, all your switches will turn on when it’s restored.
