The company stated in a pro training session that the actual distance can be farther depending on material (walls, etc.) attenuating the sensor signal to the thermostat. I believe the company rep also stated the response of the smart sensor is much faster than the room sensor (something like 5 seconds vs. a minute or two.) And yes, the battery can last much longer (approximately 5 vs. 1 year)

Has anyone used both the old sensor (came with Ecobee 3) and this new one and noticed a difference? What is better during real world use?

Does this model work with ecobee3 lite?

I also had issues updating the firmware on the 3 lite. Customer service was able to push and I was then able to pair without any problems. Working great now!

Do we need more sensors to place 1 in each bedroom or 1 is enough?

It depends. We have a 3 bedroom home but since it’s just me and my wife, mostly only one bedroom gets used. But, that sensor only participates in “sleep” in the schedule, so it only pays attention to that sensor at night. If you use every bedroom in your house, you may want a sensor in each. Or, you may determine that generally speaking, whatever the temp is in your room, the other rooms may have the same temp, so you don’t need the extra sensor(s).

    Ideal pairing for EcoBee Lite

Ideal pairing for the EcoBee Lite thermostat. Helps balance the temps throughout the house. I love being able to remotely check the temps in each individual room and know that it is calibrating the HVAC system to maintain a comfortable environment.

A highly effective and useful performance monitoring solution for our Central HVAC installation.

    HISTORY:
Since day one homeowners have been stuck with their home’s temperature readings and AC/Heating control coming from the singular fixed location of a traditional wall mounted thermostat. Often times this location is in a hallway where the reported temperature can vary wildly from the air temperature of the various living spaces within the house. This presents a whole host of problems far beyond simply not having control of the system where it actually matters! The living areas! Don’t know about you, but hanging out in our hallway is not something any of us here ever do! ,o)
With these ecobee smart sensors it is now possible to place as many of these devices as needed around the house to get a far more accurate representation of real world temperatures within these various living areas. You can choose to use the temp data from a single sensor to control your HVAC system, or any combination of your total number of sensors. The Ecobee Thermostat will average all of these readings together to determine the average internal temperature of your home based on the data from these multiple locations. (Pretty neat!)
    OUR USE CASE:
In our specific use case, we not only deployed sensors to specific rooms within our home, we also placed several additional sensors under specific vent registers in order to monitor the cooling performance of our new HVAC system over time. Being able to determine a baseline for normal AC performance at these ‘Supply’ locations will provide an ‘Early Warning System’ should we notice any degradation in AC performance over time. Cooling problems related to things like age related refrigerant leaks etc. are extremely difficult to nail down without a previous baseline of performance, preferably dating back to the original “First Run” on the day of installation. Without this hard data, all you have to go by is ‘a sense’ that your AC isn’t working as well as it used to.
Having a system like ecobee makes that level of performance monitoring simple and easy and doesn’t require any tedious record keeping by the homeowner. Just a single, well documented initial performance chart from all the various sensors during the first few weeks after installation is all you will need moving forward.
    INSTALLATION:
Adding these sensors to an existing Ecobee Thermostat system is super easy and can be done using any of your chosen external monitoring devices. In our case, I used my iPad mini 4 as the input device and never once needed to access the actual wall mounted Ecobee Thermostat to add these additional sensors.
It took me less than 5 minutes to add our two most recent sensor additions to our ecobee system. We now have a total of (6) smart sensors connected plus the ecobee wall mounted thermostat itself for a grand total of (7) temperature reporting locations.
The hottest location in our home is the south facing living room and the smart sensor we have placed in that room is currently controlling our HVAC system’s ON/OFF behavior. In addition to using a single Smart Sensor to control your HVAC system, you can also combine any number of sensors together to create an average temp for the house that the Ecobee Thermostat with use to determine when to turn on and turn off the cooling or heating.
    CONCLUSION:
All in all we are VERY IMPRESSED with how well this system works, and are grateful to our HVAC contractor who introduced us to the ecobee system as part of the recent changeout of our entire 20 year old 3.5 ton HVAC system for a new 4 ton system, which can much better handle the cooling of our 2500 sq ft home during the increasingly excessive heat of summer.

My plumber recommended this double pack with the ecobee thermometer.

You’ll be surprised when you receive this item as they are the size of a little egg but do a big job in monitoring the temperature in your home.

Nearly brilliant product ruined by one major flaw

Continuing the trend for Ecobee products, this is ‘almost’ a great product but has a couple surprisingly bad flaws.
Both flaws are around installation. The first is simply adding the sensor to the thermostat. There should be an option in the thermostat settings to do this PERIOD! Ecobee will tell you all you have to do is pull the battery isolator out while in front of the thermostat…if only that worked properly…it didn’t for me. In my experience this method did not work smoothly and resulted in a half-added state. Now if you can actually find the ‘Add sensor’ option in the mobile app (essentially the option I’m saying should also exist in the device itself), it is straight forward. I’ve seen and used the option in the app a number of times but now after 10 mins+ of looking just not finding it. ??? The pull tab install if it worked would be a good solution but that’s still no excuse for not putting an option in the device settings. One star deduction. NOTE: in the app, you need to pull up the thermostat you want to add the sensor to, tap it, select the setting menu (tap the gear icon on the upper right), find the sensors menu, and *scroll* to the bottom of the sensor list (maybe move to the top ???) to see the ‘Add sensor’ option.
The other installation issue is the wall mount brackets are so firmly locked into the packaging half the time I can’t remove them without using a screwdriver or some other tool and risk scratching them. This kind of products mistakes just make me sigh.
This all said, it really is a great product otherwise. With support up to 32 sensors (if you can manage to add them !), it really always you optimize your comfort settings. Plus its just super cool to be able ask what temperature it is in any place you put a sensor, seeing this in the app, and the ability to save and analyze historic data.

    Works! Period!!

This device solved a 20 year old problem of our bedroom not following set temperature from main part of house thermostat.
When installed complete new heat/cool unit and thermostat (Ecobee lite) set this tiny remote sensor in bedroom and it makes sure that when occupied this is the room on that system is exactly where we want it. In fact most of time we let it control for system all the time. Can set to only take priority when room occupied..or all the time.
Very versatile and with Ecobee gives all sorts of information to my iPad…and can control it from iPad if wanted.
Sensor extremely small so be careful where you put it!!!
Bought a 2 piece kit but only using one. Other is spare if needed.
Connects right now from 50 feet and 4 walls from each other. Guess bluetooth but no mention I can find on this.
Let me add…the 20 year old problem was wife complaining that out master bedroom was NEVER comfortable for her. This eliminated this problem! MBR is the main room on this unit so makes sense as original install did not put the thermostat where needed most…the bedroom. Do not use it, but can add another sensor in different location or the ecobee main unit in hallway if desired. We have not done this so far as not really a problem.
Love this setup!!!! Solve a lot of family arguments!!!! Really
