Frequently asked question

How long does the battery last?

The battery inside the Aurora dimmer is rated to last 3 years. That is contingent upon a 1 year shelf life and 8 button presses per day. The battery used in this dimmer is the CR2032.

Does it work like a conventional dimmer in that you can toggle on and off by pushing the face in?

Yes, the Aurora Smart Bulb Dimmer will toggle the lights on/off by pressing the face in. Then, to dim/brighten the lights, rotate the outer ring clockwise or counterclockwise.

How many hue bulbs can it control? I have 8 ceiling can lights on one switch.

With the Z3-1BRL-WH-L0 you can control up to 12 Philips Hue bulbs in standalone operation, without a system bridge. You can view more information about this control by viewing the spec sheet here:

Is the switch battery powered?

Yes, the Z3-1BRL-WH-L0 is battery operated. It will take one CR2032 battery, which is rated to last up to 3 years with this device. You can view more information about this by viewing the spec sheet here:

A crazy easy solution to smart lighting's biggest problem

You all know the problem. We install these awesome smart bulbs, that are then ruined by someone (especially a guest) flipping the switch on the wall which makes our smart devices unable to connect to them. Additionally, sometimes it is nice to just be able to use the switch on the wall instead of speaking.

Before that meant having to install a PITA smart switch, which I wasn’t willing to do on every switch in my home. This thing however takes a mere minute to install which I am more than willing to do on every switch in my home.

Basically it’s just a remote button/dimmer for the lights that is mounted in a way to block the switch to prevent anyone from flipping it. A simple concept, but crazy useful in practice.

I think the best part about it is the easy install.
    1. Flip switch to on position
    2. Attach mounting plate by simply tightening one screw
    3. Snap dimmer onto mounting plate
    4. Add as a ‘friends of hue’ switch in your hue app

Installing my first switch, without reading any directions that came with it or anything, took about 2 minutes (see video!). Now that I have purchased several more since making the video and have some experience with it total time from opening the box to having it on the wall controlling my lights is about a minute.

Really I can only think of two downsides
    1. It requires a standard switch for mounting. If you have one of those new fat style flipper switches this won’t fit on it.
    2. It doesn’t work with LIFX bulbs. I knew this going in as it is specific to Hue bulbs, but it’s still kind of a bummer as I prefer the much better brightness out of the LIFX bulbs. I think it’s worth it to switch to mostly Hue bulbs for this, but if they came out with something similar that could control LIFX bulbs I would be all over it.

P.S. My apologies that I keep saying ‘Lufton Aurora’ in the video review. I misread the company name.

Finally a dimmer knob that works with Hue natively but..

The biggest pain point when it comes to the HUE system are wall switches. We have the official dimmer that can’t be mounted in a US 1-gang box and the tap switch. Now we have the runlesswire rocker, which looks promising but at sixty dollars a switch, that adds up really quickly. The aurora helps this problem by adding a toggle switch and a dimmer in the same package that is easy to use at a decent price.

My grandma could install this thing. It takes about 10 minutes from start to finish if you have a toggle switches installed in your house. It pairs well with the app and then you select your room to control. Its responsive as well. If a guest comes over, they don’t think twice about how to use it. If you have used a dimmer switch before, you have mastered this already.

A few gripes with the system. First is build quality. Its fine and I’m sure it will hold up but I was expecting a little bit more than what I got. The center button is wobbly. Its wobbly to the point that I thought it was damaged in shipping. I opened the other two switches I got in the same shipment and they all had the same feel.

Same goes for the wheel. It feels floaty due to there not being a pot behind it giving any resistance. I tried my best to see if there was anything I could do to improve the feel by adding padding or something to the knob but it’s very tight inside.

One feature I would love to see implemented in the future is scene selection like the Hue dimmer remote has. Tap the button once for your default scene, tap a second time for a different one. I’d be happy with just two at this point.

The switch does not show up in home kit or home assistant. It is only accessible through the HUE app. I’d love for them to open it up to allow control through home assistant or openhab. It would expand the usefulness of the switch infinitely.

I do recommend this switch if you’re being driven crazy by people flipping switches off and then your lights go unresponsive. It does fix that problem 100% but it is a great first attempt at fixing this problem. With a little more work, I think this could be THE switch that people would want to use for HUE.

    Works very well!

Just received the lutron aurora dimmer – up until now I’ve been using the hue dimmer switch for a white entryway light — but the dimmer was overkill for a white bulb AND folks would hit the lightswitch — which was a pain before the power-on behavior patch was released. The aurora dimmer goes directly over top of the light switch in the ‘on’ position.

Of note – I did have an issue getting it to work after initially adding it as an accessory – so i deleted it from the hue app and performed a ‘reset’ on the switch – it is 2x quick presses + a long hold on the 3rd press. Once it starts blinking – perform 3x quick presses and it should forget the settings on the dimmer.

Once that was done, re-adding as an accessory worked well. It only took a minute and was a pretty minor issue. Very happy with it! Only maybe 1/4 second delay in responding to inputs, so it’s sufficiently responsive for my needs and it looks more natural than a dimmer switch … which spent most of its time, slightly askew, magnetized to the light switch plate.

The only thing i’d like added (if lutron product management is granting wishes) would be some kind of double-tap function to perhaps enable another color or scene.
