Great basic vacuum
Overall I like it. I’m a first time robot vacuum user. I bought one to daily vacuum my down stairs (which is a mix of tile and carpet) now that we have a dog. Does it do what I need? Yes and I’m satisfied with my purchase. However, the next time I buy one I’ll definitely buy one with more features.
It runs out of battery before it makes it home sometimes. When low on battery, it seems to roam around trying to catch the signal for the charger. Sometimes it goes right by it. So I’m not sure what it’s process is on how it goes home. When it does get stuck or run out of battery, it sends you a notification, which is helpful.
Also I have the charger on tile and it often moves it around so I need to somehow fasten it to the ground. (Probably with some command strips). Once or twice it’s made it home but isn’t on the charger properly so it won’t have battery to run the next day.
I also wish it room mapped so I could have it just do the kitchen area.
In the end, these things are not that big of a deal to me because I’m happy to wake up to a vacuumed floor I didn’t have to do myself.08/18/2022Verified Purchase
I’ve owned a few different brand named robot vacs in the past but this one is by far the best one! First of all, very easy to clean all the brushes and dump out the dust reservoir. I shed a lot of hair and it gets caught in the main brush but when it comes down to cleaning it, the mechanism pops out easy and I can remove all the caught hair. The robot is very efficient and thorough, it is slightly elevated and can sorta “climb” things? Due to this detail, it means it can get stuck in things but also has an advantage of being able to vacuum thicker rugs around your home and climb over doorways that may have a bump. A mixed bag
This is my first foray into robot vacuum cleaners. My daughter has one and she suggested an iRobot model since she owns one and they seem to be the major player in this space.
As I did my research I came to understand that there are many iterations of iRobot models at different price points. After some research I decided on this model, the 692 which is very similar to the model 694 which is sold by some retailers but not all retailers. There is a good You tube video that reviews this model and the 694. I recommend you watch it. Also Amazon allowed me to pay it off with no interest over 4 months.
Let me also point out that I also needed a robot vacuum cleaner because we recently adopted a cat from the local animal shelter but unfortunately they didn’t tell us he had been treated for fleas and that we would need to continue that treatment. Needless to say we developed a pretty good flea infestation and we live in a 2 level home. The first 30 days seem to be critical in getting rid of fleas and vacuuming is the key if you’re not going to use a professional exterminator with chemicals. When the exterminator said we would need to clear out of the house and take our new pet too I knew that route wasn’t for us.
We ended up putting baking soda, salt and diatomaceous earth down on the carpets multiple times in different combinations over a 3 week period so that there was a lot of natural chemicals on the carpets that had been vacuumed up by our 2 upright vacuums, the steam cleanings and yet I was to find out there was more powders in the carpets
I should point out that we own 2 Dyson vacuums, 1 is designed for pets and the other is a ‘light-weight’ version. We were vacuuming once, sometimes twice a day for nearly a month. In addition we had steam cleaned the carpets a couple of times, once professionally. By the end of the month we were exhausted vacuuming 3 bedrooms with deep pile carpeting that is only about 3 years old and 2 hard wood floors downstairs. These vacuums were a bear to move around. Not to mention that you MUST empty the canisters once you vacuum when you have fleas so this added to the work load.
Enter the iRobot 692. I had low expectations so that if it did a great job I would be pleasantly surprised but more importantly it would relieve my wife, son and myself from vacuum duty.
I set it up without much of a problem using their quick setup guide and putting the app on my phone.
I set it loose on my carpets and sure enough it was off and running. At first I was amazed by its yeoman- like abilities. It seemed to be able to get around furniture without too much difficulty. It functions best if you can remove obstacles that might be in its way like electrical cords, furniture that can be lifted off the ground and of coarse pets.
When it finished my bedroom (18×13) it took about an hour and twenty minutes. I immediately took the unit outside to clean the tray. The tray has a built-in filter and when you empty the tray you MUST clean that filter too. Otherwise it won’t clean to its best ability. Pay no attention to their recommendation that the filter should be cleaned once a week. Even without pets and the powder we had laid down I STRONGLY recommend that you clean the filter after each use
After all this I can say the robot cleaner is helpful because it does indeed clean your carpets. For us, it means we don’t have to keep lugging the Dysons upstairs and then downstairs and for that alone it’s worth it.
The tray still collects some of the powders that had been left behind by 2 Dysons, a professional steam cleaner and my own steam cleaner.
After every use you must clean this machine. Not only clean the tray but the filter too. I own a power tool compressor and I must fire it up every time I need to clean out the iRobot. Not only the tray but the brushes, the wheels, spinning sweeper and the unit itself. It’s a must otherwise you’ll need cans of Dustaway to clean the unit if you don’t own a compressor.
The tray seems to load up with what looks like a big dust ball which I now suspect are carpet fibers which means it could be rough on carpets.
Which brings me to the last point. Fibers that hang from the under side of my living room couches wrap themselves around the spinning brush and the roller brush (see pic). I must spend 10-15 minutes every time I clean the tray to cut away these fibers that wrap it self around everything. It’s a major pain in the neck.
It bumps into furniture quite hard. It has several scars on the unit already. Some of my furniture is pine and it has some minor dings from the unit.
Lastly , it will need maintenance. The rollers, the filer and the brushes will need to be replaced regularly and that can be costly.
If I didn’t need the iRobot for the flea control, I probably would keep it because it does help reduce the need for a proper vacuuming especially since my wife and I are north of 60 and we have better things to do with our time other than vacuuming and this makes a good substitute for having to vacuum every week or so.
Recommended with caveats.
Update 3-18-22 – The fleas are gone (we think) and now I’m running the 692 for general vacuuming purposes.
Here are some additional observations I feel I can confidently state. First the app is not very sophisticated. From time to time there is a delay from the time the 692 is finished to the time I get notified on my android. Which brings me to my second point, I have to babysit the machine in order to see if it has finished its cycle and that it hasn’t gotten wedged somewhere because again, there is a delay in notifying me when this happens. I know there is no problem with my internet because I live in a small 1300 square foot home with 400/20 download/upload speed.
Also if I want to stop the 692 from cleaning in one room and bring it to another room I can’t just stop the operation on the app and this causes some confusion for the machine because if you moved it to another room you have to start it again but it thinks it’s in the same room and you have restarted the same job.
I took the extended warranty because I can see this machine is not going to last. I took the 4 year warranty because I can see that the internals (the battery and the guts) are not built to take a beating that using this machine everyday or every other day is going to dish out.
Currently the 692 is selling for $215.00 and dare I say it’s a steal at the price. I would say it’s a good value all the way to $250.00. After that, you will have to decide if my review and the other reviews here justify the cost of this little machine.
Still recommended with caveats.

Great for helping maintain floor day to day
We have 3 cats who shed and track litter around like it’s their job. With a 5 month old who will soon be crawling, I desperately wanted something to help maintain the floors on a daily basis. This does a good job with and I’m glad I made the purchase. It certainly misses spots on occasion, and I still do a deep clean with our regular vacuum about once every two weeks. In my opinion this was worth the money to not have to deal with the headache of vacuuming every day. I bought the Roomba 692 as a present for my mother’s 75th birthday. I was REALLY hoping it would perform as expected because mom is a notorious ‘gadget’ hater. She doesn’t trust anything that ‘sounds too good to be true’ and as if on cue she didn’t like it saying, ‘It looks too small for my house’ and ‘It’s going to scare Piper.’ (My mother’s very, VERY timid dog)
