Do you have to use the app or can you connect directly to HomeKit?

Even with only 2.4g config I'm on my 2nd hr in trying together this smart plug connected w Homekit. All directions for setup are very straightforward. Still won't connect. About to return it.

Once you set up the device on a 2.4ghz network, can you switch your ios device back to 5ghz or must you keep the controlling device on the 2.4ghz net?

Yes you can switch your phone back to 5 GHz.

Will this be upgraded to use the Thread network?

I don't know what you mean by Thread network... BUT, I can tell you that once you install them, they will be added to the Control Program/App where you can control them along with the other devices you have installed... Makes Dumb Things Smart

As usual, if you’re using Apple’s HomeKit, you want Meross stuff. They work great.
I got tired of having drip coffee makers die on me after six months, so I broke down and bought a percolator. The downside was that no percolators (that I knew of) had timers built in. So I got this dual outlet from Meross. I can use HomeKit to define a time to turn it on or off, but I just have it so I can say, ‘Hey, Siri, good morning.’
With that, lights turn on that lead to the the office, the light above the coffee pot turns on, and the coffee starts brewing. It’s like living in the future with an invisible assistant.

    Don’t waste your time…. Update!

Update: I had the company reach out to me and they provided a replacement plug. The replacement had some issues, such as the QR code not working in HomeKit. After multiple emails and a few hours of troubleshooting, the firmware on the plugs was out of date.
If you have trouble with your plugs, you will need to download the manufacturer’s app and update the firmware. This seems to fix some issues.
I upgraded my review from 1 star to 3 stars as this helps address many problems with the product. I can’t say going forward that I’ll keep using the plug but the company did reach out through multiple emails to address concerns with their product.

These worked well for a while but literally 5 days past the Amazon return window and one of them has already stopped connecting to wireless and will not connect when trying to re-pair it via HomeKit.
Save yourself headache and time and go with a different brand. The QC on these seem to be pretty questionable.

It works with Home Kit and Siri. Good product.

This is our third set, after a year it has been holding well. We have purchased more for the rest of the home.

I had to reset one once

I have two, both went non-responsive after a firmware update. Unplugged it, put it back after two minutes or so and it worked again.
